beating on wall street. the tech giant has seen its stock price drop for eight straight weeks. apple's market value peaked in september at $625 billion. since then it's been a steady drop to just under $497 billion today. cbs 5 reporter len ramirez tells us as stocks drop, customer loyalty remains high. >> reporter: apple fans always remain loyal to the company. >> i think the brand is the product. it's not going any of where. >> reporter: but investors have been a lot more fickle. >> apple dropped about 30% from its all-time high of $705. >> reporter: and that's just since september. menlo park portfolio manager patrick white says a combination of factors has triggered a bona fide apple sell-off. >> to drop 30% in a short period of time means the investment public's perception has changed. and either they are using it for a source of funds or they

think that the company has sold all the ipads and imax that they are going to sell ever. >> reporter: although apple stocks finished up slightly today, its price of $527 a share is not enough to erase its dramatic downhill slide. dating back to the original ipod and then continuing with the iphone and the ipad, apple has had a string of consumer hits. what it hasn't had a lot of, that is until now, is competition. >> microsoft and knew mia is a great example. they are catching up. >> reporter: some say microsoft with its touchscreen windows 8 technology and surface tablet is outinnovating tablet and goingle with its android phones and nexus 7 tablet is taking away chunks of apple's market share. >> i have iphone, three ipads and macbook pro. >> reporter: even some apple users admit the recent products are less than blockbuster. >> ipad mini is good. i just tested it. but nexus 7 is equally good. so that's apple has to figure out what's the neck thing

incremental changes is not what apple is about. that's not the way we look at it as an apple fan. >> reporter: although apple no longer has its visionary, the company is still sitting on a mountain of cash. >> sometime it's going to hit a point where it finds a lot of buyers again. >> reporter: for many the question is when, not if appear logical turn it around. in palo alto, len ramirez, cbs 5. san francisco sheriff deputies are usually the ones arresting criminals but tonight, one deputy is under arrest accused of robbing a bank. cbs 5 reporter don knapp tells us for all his experience, the deputy didn't do a very good job of covering his tracks. don. >> reporter: that's right. police say the man who entered this bank last week was wearing a dark hat, dark sunglasses, and a black sweatshirt. but they say he didn't conceal his fingerprints on a demand note. and that's why they have a

a robber with armsful of cash may have played a role. while bank robberies are serious and people may be hurt or killed, customers at this bank say they see the lighter side. >> this bank has been robbed -- i have been here about six years -- three times. >> i guess they should hire a security guard. that didn't stop it. so -- >> reporter: deputy tong has been with the sheriff's department since 2005. >> i'm sorry that he felt desperate enough that he had to rob a bank. because now he is going to end up in big, big trouble. and it may not be a very good ending for him. >> reporter: deputy tong is being held in jail on a $150,000 bail. dana? >> all right, napa valley, thank you very much. well, police in the east bay arrested one of their own. a commander accused of ripping off an 82-year-old homeowner. pleasanton police say matthew messier and his wife placed the

victim's entire estate into a trust they controlled. police say messier used his position in law enforcement to gain the victim's trust. messier resigned from the pinole police department last month. police arrested him on thursday, yesterday. they are still looking for his wife. say good-bye to wonder bread and twinkies. hostess brands is going out of business. the company is struggling with bankruptcy, changing tastes and employees on strike. dozens of people will lose their job at the hostess bakery in oakland. >> reporter: signs are up, these people are still standing. they are fired for warmth and their value still burns. >> i'm just fighting for my rights. and don't take away what i got. >> reporter: hostess products will soon become a novelty. customers will be able to preserve some of its sweetness, but the company's 18,000 workers won't. >> devastating. you know, we have members here that have been here for a long

time. >> reporter: the household name bakery called it quits this morning. reps say they couldn't keep up with demand after a nationwide strike crippled production. >> we believe in hostess. we have hostess had a bright future. unfortunately it's not working out that way and there's a lot of sad people today. >> reporter: there were 70 employees here at colombo bakery and now former hostess distributor. workers here joined the national strike last week. now they are moving from the picket lines to the unemployment lines with the holidays just around the corner. >> they take it off one time and one more time and maybe they keep doing all the time and the life is very expensive, so we can't afford it right now. >> reporter: moses was a foreman here for almost 26 years. now he is worried about supporting his family. >> will be hard for me anyway. i don't think it's any different if i stay here or i go inside they are going to cut money anyway and benefits. >> reporter: hostess has a hearing scheduled with the u.s. bankruptcy court on monday.

the man's wristwatch which immediately raised suspicions. >> reporter: the fbi now taking the lead in this investigation. and alameda county sheriff's deputies which actually made the arrest say there is no question what was found here was dangerous. the incident occurred here at the terminal 2 security checkpoint at the oakland international airport. authorities say 49-year-old jeffrey mcgann a 49-year-old resident of rancho palos verdes was trying to botched a flight home to l.a.x. when he attempted to pass through the security checkpoint with a very suspicious watch. >> the watch had on it a toggle switch, a series of fuses, a series of wires protruding from it, a circuit board, and the watch itself which was on incorrect time. >> reporter: it wasn't just the watch that drew authorities' attention, it was his overall behavior and an unusual alteration to his boots.

>> be they also had what appeared to be a homemade cavity in there and he was very evasive on everything he was doing. >> reporter: while no actual explosives were found on mcgann, nor in his luggage, authorities say there's no question he was carrying potentially dangerous materials. >> it absolutely could have been a triggering device. obviously he was missing a couple of things along the way. >> reporter: passengers were alarmed to hear of the security scare but say they have confidence in their overall security at the airport. >> i mean, everything now is pretty much considered suspicious. >> reporter: there is no motive. mr. mcgann said the watch is art. he has ties to the artist community in southern california. tonight he is being held at the santa right jail. >> thank you, mark sayre in

oakland a 65-year-old woman kidnapped, beaten sexually assaulted and the suspects is a 14-year-old boy. it started at a store on plaza drive in vallejo. the woman was found duct taped in a ditch on 80. anne makovec reports. >> we had a conversation with the victim. she is an incredibly strong insightful woman. >> reporter: this lieutenant is referring to a 56-year-old woman kid -- 65-year-old woman kidnapped and assaulted at gunpoint by a 14-year-old boy starting at a shopping center on plaza drive in vallejo late yesterday afternoon. police say the boy forced the woman to drive her minivan a few miles then stopped to assault her both physically and sexually. >> it was an extremely serious violent attack. >> severe head trauma. her eyes were swollen shut. >> reporter: the teen left the woman unconscious bound in duct

tape on highway 80 found by passersby. >> they summoned aid for her, took care of her and got her treatment. they also provided information to the police which ultimately assisted us in making the arrest. >> reporter: as police were gathering those clues, they say the teen called one of the victim's family members demanding ransom money. police arrested the boy soon after, back at the shopping center, still in possession of the woman's van. they say his handgun turned out to be a replica. that 14-year-old is now in juvenile hall facing charges including attempted murder, carjacking and kidnapping for ransom. it will be up to the d.a. if he is charged as an adult. in vallejo, anne makovec, cbs 5. time to talk weather. the most active doppler we have seen in a month. most of the rain is offshore but all moving from southwest to northeast. you see that yellow around orange and red to the south and west of san francisco?

it is going to be an extremely soggy evening on the peninsula from burlingame, san mateo, north through daly city by the airport and downtown san francisco will be very soggy. that said, you're getting a break right now from mill valley. we have a lot of rainfall still for san rafael, north through napa and sonoma county. and now the last to see the heavier showers places like concord and pleasant hill and walnut creek. you will see rain increase this evening. the setup in the atmosphere is similar to yesterday in that we have an approaching area of low pressure but it's getting closer and closer and the rain is becoming more intense and widespread continuing tonight and early tomorrow. i think we'll get a bit of a break tomorrow afternoon but then after this low pressure moves out, we have a front that's going to move through giving us more rainfall saturday night into sunday morning. you got to get outside over the weekend and want to stay dry? carry an umbrella or get outside on sunday afternoon. because once this front moves through, we will dry out. so what to expect? when it's raining we have a tropical connection so it will be steady and heavy although we'll have breaks between the

merchandise may be stolen from retail stores, several upscale boutiques in downtown san francisco recently hit by a gang of teens known on the street as the rainbow girls. in palo alto, another gang of shoplifters recently pulled off an $11,000 bra heist at a victoria's secret store. >> it's a very organized network. we have people that committee the crime and people that sell them to these middlemen who pay the people who shop lift and and people in turn sell them to the people selling them on the streets. >> reporter: we wanted to know what the sellers at the flea market had to say and headed to the stall with the victoria's secret merchandise. my name is ken bastida with cbs 5 here in san francisco. i wanted to ask you about some of the merchandise you have out on the table here. >> uhm, no, i'm sorry. no. you can't just take my video -- you can't just take video of me. >> reporter: well, i can because this is a public place. i want to ask you -- >> you're -- >> don't touch the camera. >> you want to take video?

linda marie macdonald. now at 6:30 a suspect wanted in california and nevada caught at a san francisco steakhouse. well, tonight police credit a sharp eyed off duty oakland officer with that arrest. it happened at a ruth's chris steakhouse on van ness avenue in san francisco. as cbs 5 reporter da lin tells us, the man under arrest is suspected in numerous east bay felonies. >> reporter: what was supposed to be a romantic birthday dinner for an off-duty oakland police officer turned into a crime-fighting date involving a most wanted fugitive. oakland police say this man, 20- year-old ronnie flenaugh, had been on the run for six months. >> he was my number one target out in east oakland. >> reporter: in fact, just an hour before the arrest in san francisco, oakland police flew out to las vegas and raided a home where they thought flenaugh was hiding. he wasn't there. instead, he and a big group of people walked into a steakhouse

in san francisco where an off- duty oakland police officer was celebrating his wife's birthday. >> what drew the attention to the off-duty officer is that a gentleman walked in with a hooded sweatshirt over his head a baseball cap pulled down low and the sweatshirt drawn closely around his face. >> reporter: but the oakland officer recognized flenaugh, called for backup and wait for the group to eat dinner. as they walked out, armed officers surrounded them. police say he is the head of a very violent east oakland gang. investigators linked him to countless armed robberies and shootings in oakland and surrounding cities. >> we could say without a doubt that there are murders that can be attributed to mr. flenaugh. >> reporter: they say his gang also had a number of shootouts with rival gangs in east oakland. >> one of the retaliatory shootings mr. flenaugh's wife was shot eight times while she sat in front of the school picking up her children after school in broad daylight. >> reporter: the shootings happened more than a month ago. his wife survived her injuries. but that was another example of

how dangerous these people are. police said the shooter opened fire in front of kids and parents. that's why police are glad flenaugh is now in custody. >> we're hoping that his arrest can kind of squash some of the ongoing retaliatory issues that are happening. >> reporter: in oakland, i'm da lin, cbs 5. a cutting torch is blamed for igniting an oil platform explosion in the gulf of mexico. this happened around 25 miles southeast of grand isle, louisiana. at least two people were killed. four others were hurt. two people are still missing. the coast guard says only a small amount of oil spilled from that platform. israel is preparing to escalate its military operations against hamas in gaza. troops in armored vehicles are gathering on the border and 16,000 israeli reservists have been called up. israel's defense minister is also seeking to mobilize as many as 75,000 more. also today, hamas launched

rockets at jerusalem. that marks a serious escalation of the conflict that began when israel assassinated the military chief of hamas in response to a hamas rocket attack on israel. closer to home, hundreds are protesting the violence in the middle east outside the israeli consulate in san francisco. pro-palestinian demonstrators say israeli air strikes are attacking innocent civilians. there are a few dozen israel supporters at the same location. they say continuous rocket attacks from hamas have left israel no choice but to take action. israel's consul-general in san francisco warns that things could get more serious. >> at the moment there are about 4.5 million israelis in bomb shelters including my family. this is unstainable. the government must protect its people. that's the responsibility of every government. it doesn't matter if it's israel or american or british or any other government. they have to protect their

citizens. and whatever it takes, we'll do it. and if it's not enough to do what we're doing now, then, yes, a ground operation is a possibility. >> israel's two largest cities have never before been exposed to rocket fire from hamas. congressional leaders seem optimistic they can reach a deal avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." lawmakers need to come to an agreement to avert tax increases and spending cuts that take effect january 1. cbs 5 reporter grace lee on what they are saying about those negotiations. >> reporter: let's start with then to. it seemed intentionally promising, the tone. congressional parties have to appear they are working hard to come to the middle. there is a lot of pressure on them now. while they have a long way to go, there was at least one immediate effect that we saw today. ending the week with a rally wall street closed with the dow up 45 on hopes that a deal avoid the "fiscal cliff" may

actually be nearing. >> we have to make sure that taxes don't go up on middle class families, that our economy remains strong that we are creating jobs. >> reporter: the president invited congressional leaders from both parties to the white house today to hammer out the owls of a compromise. failure could be disastrous. simultaneous tax increases and cutting government spending could mean a recession in 2013 in this high stakes game. the group appeared harmonious at least in front of the press. >> it was good. i feel confident that a solution may be in sight. >> i believe that the framework that i have outlined in our meeting today is consistent with the president's call for a fair and balanced approach. >> reporter: the president even took the time to wish the speaker a happy birthday. >> we're not going to embarrass him with a cake because we didn't know how many candles were needed. but -- >> damn right. [ laughter ] >> but we want to wish hm a

happy birthday. >> reporter: there were hints that real negotiations took place today. democrats say they are willing to reduce spending and cut programs while republicans implied they would be willing to raise taxes of some kind. >> to show our seriousness we have put revenue on the table as long as it's accompanied by significant spending cuts. >> we're both going to have to give up some of the things that we know are a problem. >> reporter: so we have six weeks before the end of the year and democratic leaders are saying that them this finished before christmas. senator reed even said they would be willing to work through the thanksgiving holiday to make sure that this happened but there are new indications just this evening that the republicans may be the ones to drag this out into 2013 so take one step forward two steps back so we will be watching this. >> thank you. well, the clock is particularring to cash in. coming up in tonight -- the clock is ticking to cash in. coming up in tonight's

an estimated 23 billion in price fixed panels were sold between 1999 and 2006. consumers have until december 6 to file a claim for a cash settlement of anywhere between $25 and $200 depending on how many tvs, monitors and laptops you purchased. well, now that hostess is going out of business, twinkies are selling like hotcakes. and apparently, so is twinkie merchandise. twinkie the kit lunchboxes are a hot item. ebay listed one 14.99 last week sold for $690 today. >> come on. >> whoo. >> that's right. if that's out of your price range there are others averaging $100 the tsa is easing up on restrictions. travelers will be able to carry snow globes. the only restriction they have to be 3.4 ounces the size of a tennis ball and has to fit in a resealable bag. two other holiday items now allowed are cakes and pies.

the adop 24 years ago, i adopt the first of me three children so today it was very moving to see the adoption process come to an emotional and for 30 children see their new lives begin. they now have a family to be part of. a home to call their own and a future that's something they probably only dreamed of. it's one thing to celebrate a child's birthday. >> can you sing twinkle twinkle? >> reporter: another to celebrate the beginning of a child's life in your family. >> i know it's been a long time standing here but this is the good part and this is going to be the quick part. >> reporter: this is the 13th year there's been a formal adoption ceremony in alameda county on national adoption day. and the dream of a forever family came true for 19 children who until today had been part of the county's foster care system. >> it's a little scary and knowing that she's our responsibility now for the rest of her life. but it's just finally a

finalization and just so happy to finally have it all over with. >> reporter: david and hillary have three other adopted children. the youngest is now almost 25. and you wouldn't be the firstask them -- >> we have had a lot of people say that. are you crazy? family members have said that, are you crazy? you do what you have to do. >> reporter: judges and court employees put their regular jobs aside in order to expedite and finalize the adoption process for these children and for parents like marta. >> the idea came from a woman that we met at a soccer game for our son and she told us about foster to adopt and we wanted a second child so we decided to sign up and to get licensed and we were extremely fortunate that hanna came into our lives about four or five months later. >> happy. >> now he has a sister. it is national adoption day. and if you are interested in

hayward, toward livermore and pleasanton no rainfall. all the rain right now confined to north of the golden gate. showers at the southern edge of the rain. san francisco 58 degrees. strong area of low pressure we have been tracking it for days moving over top of us so we'll be soggy this evening and even in the areas right now like in the south bay where you're not seeing rainfall you will get some rain but not as intense. low pressure tonight and tomorrow the wettest part of this three-day wet period, then a break tomorrow evening once that low pressure area moves out. we'll have a cold front that will move through giving us another round of steady to heavy rainfall saturday night to early sunday. right now all indications are this front will be through all of the bay area by lunchtime on sunday which means sunday afternoon, right now is trending mainly dry. here's what our computer forecast model is saying just between now and 11:00 tonight. an inch of rainfall for san rafael more than half inch for

pacifica and santa rosa. that's a lot of rain in a short amount of time. more rainfall tonight and tomorrow. many of you will likely see an inch rain over the next 24 and chilly temperatures. santa clara 63. you will get some rain tonight early tomorrow. pleasant hill 61. dublin-pleasanton, livermore, the tri-valley low 60s. kentfield 59. daly city 60 degrees with rain likely especially tomorrow morning. things begin to clear out sunday afternoon. monday and tuesday we grab a couple of dry days for the short workweek. showers back on wednesday and right now, as you're eating that turkey or whatever you eat on thanksgiving, maybe some crab, look at mid-60s with scattered showers. speaking of the holidays, we have roberta roberta out with a big countdown on a sign that san francisco is ready to celebrate with roberta gonzales. >> reporter: it's the 26th annual of the lighting. embarcadero center. we are ready for the official countdown. 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
